Clarify the problem and outcome
What are you trying to change, create or improve? Who benefits? What would success look like? This becomes the foundation for both grant narratives and sponsor conversations.
Choose the right type of funding
Grants, sponsorships, contracts, donations, partnerships and earned revenue solve different problems. Do not assume a grant is the best answer simply because you need funding.
Organize the basic documents
Depending on the opportunity, prepare your legal information, budget, organization overview, leadership information, program description, timeline, policies, banking information, prior results and measurement plan.
Know what you can contribute
Funders and sponsors want to understand your role, not only your need. Identify your expertise, audience, relationships, infrastructure, staff time, distribution, credibility or other assets.
Research fit before applying
Read eligibility rules, funding priorities, past recipients and stated goals. A smaller list of genuinely aligned opportunities is usually more productive than applying everywhere.
Create a realistic follow-up system
Track deadlines, conversations, required documents, next steps and relationship history. Funding development is often a pipeline, not a single application.
